Sarachek 2025. The best words of the year. Packed gyms, roaring crowds, and basketball squads from across the country are coming to Washington Heights this weekend, and it is not something you’ll want to miss. As the hosts of the tournament, the #11 MTA Lions see themselves with a primetime Tier I matchup against #6 Berman. Despite their home-court advantage, MTA enters as the underdogs in this matchup. Berman returns to the tournament after a tough 2024 Sarachek campaign where they suffered back-to-back tough losses to TABC and DRS, dropping them to a Tier II consolation matchup vs MTA. Berman won that game and proceeded to beat out Ramaz for 5th place in Tier II.

MTA looks to build on a strong season where they locked up the 2 seed in their division in the Yeshiva League with an impressive 12-2 record. Although a quarterfinal loss to MDY ended their season, MTA looks to fight back and prove their #11 rank wrong.

MTA is highlighted by seniors Josh Treuhaft and Jakey Abenaim, who will both look to dominate on the offensive side of the floor. Abenaim, an MYHSAL all-star this season, brought a spark to this MTA team as a new arrival. Both he and 6’5” Treuhaft bring tremendous talent to this roster, aiming to cause immense chaos in this tournament. Expect the Lions to come out with a fire and put on a show.

#6 Berman ended their season at 31-7, featuring a strong roster led by junior Alex August. August averages an impressive 23 points per game while taking over 250 more shots than his teammates. Expect him to shoot from deep and run the fast break. After not qualifying for Tier I last year, Berman looks to build on a successful regular season and get to the promised land.

MTA and Berman both bring size and shooting to the court along with their fast-paced offenses. Be ready to watch a high-scoring game and a clinic from beyond the arc. Berman will look to advance to the Tier I quarterfinals and solidify their position in the tournament. MTA, meanwhile, will look to prove the skeptics wrong and reestablish themselves as a legitimate contender. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 PM at the Max Stern Athletic Center and will be streaming right here on MacsLive. Make sure to tune in!
