Gameday Preview: YU@ Sarah Lawrence

Zachary Sicklick

"Playing at home isn't just about familiarity with the court, it's about the comfort of being surrounded by your family, friends, and the energy of your home crowd."

The Macs game on Sunday will be a telling sign for the direction of the Skyline Conference playoffs. For the Maccabees, Sunday’s clash against Sarah Lawrence is more than just another game; it’s a defining moment that could shape the course of the postseason. The stakes are monumental: a victory would mean the Macs clinch the division, securing the comforts of home at least until the conference championship, while defeat could send them on a playoff road trip earlier than anticipated. Last time the Macs faced Sarah Lawrence, it was a battle for the ages, culminating in sheer heartbreak for Yeshiva as the Gryphons delivered a soul-crushing buzzer-beater in the Max Stern Athletic Center, a shot so spectacular it landed at #2 on ESPN’s Top 10 plays that night. Yeshiva (14-8, 11-2 Skyline) is coming off a nine point victory against Mount St. Vincent, charged by Yoav Oselka’s 22 points & 15 rebounds, while Sarah Lawrence (14-8, 10-3 Skyline) is coming off a tight three point loss to Purchase.

With the playoff picture hanging in the balance, both squads understand the magnitude of what lies ahead. Last time around, the Gryphons showed their depth, with four players scoring in double digits, including their hero of the night, Eamon Kelly. The Macs were paced by the leading scorer of the night, Zevi Samet, who had 25. The Macs have been riding the hot hand recently and they will look to do so once again, hoping to strike early and set the tone before Sarah Lawrence can find its rhythm. This is more than a regular season game—it’s a battle of resilience. Only one team will walk away with the upper hand in the playoff race, and when the final buzzer sounds, the victor will be the team that wanted it more. Buckle up—Sunday promises to be a thriller.

Extra Pass:

Ever since Or's return to the lineup, the Maccabees' ball movement has been nothing short of exceptional. Their passing has been crisp, unselfish, and methodical, as they continue to make the extra pass possession after possession. This has allowed them to maximize their offensive efficiency. The Macs’ ability to consistently turn good shots into great ones has been the driving force behind their recent offensive success. By maintaining this level of patience and precision, they enhance their chances of breaking down Sarah Lawrence’s defense.

Fundamental Basketball:

Fundamental basketball serves as the cornerstone of any championship-caliber team. While the term may be associated with lower school basketball, it is just as vital for a college team as well. The Macs, with their biggest game of the season coming up, have no room for error. No matter how talented a team may be, success is ultimately built on the pillars of discipline, communication, and teamwork. Every possession will matter, every decision will carry weight, and every player must be locked in mentally and physically. Sticking to the basics—crisp ball movement, strong defensive rotations, and smart shot selection—will be the difference between victory and defeat. If Yeshiva can maintain their composure, and not let the pressure of this game get to them, then they should be able to win a gritty battle.

Rebounds:

The Gryphon’s might be the ultimate test for the Macs on the glass. With their considerable height and relentless pursuit of every rebound and loose ball, Sarah Lawrence has established itself as a team that thrives on controlling the boards. Whether it is 6’10” Chris Dougherty, 5’10” Eamon Kelly, or anybody else on that team, the Macs must make sure to box out and win the rebound battle. Every second chance opportunity the Macs get helps kindle a fire of confidence. Every defensive rebound secured will get Sarah Lawrence a little more anxious and riled up. For the Macs, dominating the glass will be a non-negotiable key to victory. They must crash the boards with intensity, battle for every 50/50 ball, and impose their will in the paint. If they can control this aspect of the game, they’ll take a major step toward taking control of this crucial matchup.
