On Wednesday night, February 8, the Yeshiva University Maccabees will head to Patchogue, NY to take on St. Joseph’s University Long Island. In the first meeting between the two teams, the Golden Eagles of St. Joseph edged out a 73-62 win over the Macs. The Golden Eagles went on a 15-0 run late in the second half that propelled them to victory. Max Zakheim had 23 points and Zevi Samet added 18 of his own for the Macs, while Xavier Allen scored 26 for the Golden Eagles.
St. Joseph’s is just 10-10 on the season and 7-5 in conference play, but have been able to earn wins with their defense. They have held their opponents to just 62.6 points per game, on 36% from the field and 27% from three. The Macs struggled to make shots in their first meeting, shooting just 5-26 from deep. In their most recent game, a win over Farmingdale, the Golden Eagles held the division leaders to just 49 points for the game.
Xavier Allen is St. Joseph’s leading scorer, contributing 16.6 points per game. He also leads the team in assists and rebounds. Sophomore forward Alec Tabada missed the first game against the Macs but has been a key cog in the rotation since he began playing. He averages over 15 points and seven rebounds per game. Spencer Malloy, who scored 13 in the last matchup, is the second-leading scorer for the Golden Eagles.
