Gameday Preview: Men's Basketball vs Merchant Marine

On Sunday, January 29, the Yeshiva University Maccabees will travel to Kings Point, NY to take on the Merchant Marine Mariners in a Skyline conference matchup. Winners of their last two, the Macs enter with an overall record of 10-8, going 7-2 in conference play. In their last game, an 81-70 win against Maritime, Max Zakheim led the way with 27 points while notably taking 15 shots at the free throw line. Ball control was crucial to their victorious effort with the team only turning the ball over seven times. The turnover battle has been a struggle all season for the team as they have had as many giveaways as turnovers forced on the year.

Merchant Marine is 9-9 on the season and also 7-2 in conference games. The Mariners are hot, riding a four game win streak, headlined by a win over Farmingdale. Averaging just 64.6 points per game, the Mariners rank next to last in the Skyline conference in the category. Although this Macs team has allowed the second highest opponent field goal percentage in the conference, they should still be able to slow down the Merchant Marine offensive attack. Limiting points in the paint will be crucial for the Macs against a Merchant Marine team that regularly scores from inside.

Drew Zalescik is the Mariners top scorer, averaging 12.7 points per game on an efficient 49% from the field and 44% from three. In their last game, Bryce Bristow turned in one of his best performances of the season, posting a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Guard Isaac Vencel leads the team with over three assists per game to go along with just under nine points per contest.
