On Sunday afternoon, January 22, Yeshiva will take on the Mary Washington Eagles from Virginia. The Macs are in the midst of a four-game losing streak which has dropped them down to a record of 8-8. Most recently, the Macs could not close out Wesleyan after holding an 11-point lead deep into the second half. Mary Washington is 13-4 on the year, including a 58-52 win over defending national champion Randolph Macon.
Mary Washington enters this matchup scoring 72.1 points per game on an efficient 44.4% from the field. A Yeshiva team that has struggled somewhat defensively, in particular against size, will have its hands full against the Eagles, who have both size and talented scorers in their lineup. The Eagles' physicality allows them to get to the line almost 10 more times per game than the Macs. A Macs team that struggles with ball security will need to be smart and decisive with their passes against an Eagles team that forces four more turnovers than they themselves commit.
The Eagles' top two scorers are Greg Rowson and Da’Shawn Cook, averaging 17.2 and 16.3 respectively. Both have been efficient as well, shooting over 45% from the field and over 35% from beyond the arc. Big man Emmanuel Aghayere will be a physical presence inside for Mary Washington. The Macs will need to find ways to keep him off the glass while not giving space to the capable scorers of the Eagles.
