On Wednesday night, January 25th, the Yeshiva University Maccabees will host the Maritime College Privateers. Yeshiva is 9-8 on the season and 6-2 in conference play. They are coming off a much-needed victory against the University of Mary Washington— Zevi Samet led the way for them with 30 points from seven threes. Max Zakheim also had a big game, contributing 19 points. Newcomer Effy Freundlich gave a nice little boost off the bench, shooting a perfect 3-3 from the field and bringing tenacity on defense by coming up with four steals. Roy Itcovichi only got three shot attempts last game. He will need to be more aggressive as the postseason approaches if the team wants a real chance come playoff time. The Macs have control of their destiny in the Skyline conference. If they can win the next eight games, starting with this one tonight, they will lock up the number one seed in the conference.
The Privateers are 9-8 on the season and 5-3 in conference play. They are led by senior guard Ryan Donovan, who is averaging 17.8 points per game. He’s coming off of a huge 28-point showing against Old Westbury in their last contest, so look for him to try to get going early in this one. Maritime has struggled to shoot the three-ball so far this season, so their style of play is not like the Macs at all. The Macs are going to move the ball and find open shooters who fire away, while Maritime is going to attack the rim and try to get to the free-throw line. The key to the game for them is going to be to limit guys like Samet and Betesh from getting easy looks and force Yeshiva to play around the rim, where they are more uncomfortable.
