Gameday Preview: Men’s Basketball vs #21 Illinois Wesleyan

On Saturday night, November 12th, the Yeshiva Maccabees will play the Illinois Wesleyan Titans to kick off the Sikma Hall of Fame Invitational. This is a rematch from the matchup last season when the Titans went into the Max Stern Athletic Center and won in dominant fashion, 73-59.

The Macs fell in their first game of the season last week to a talented 13th ranked St. Joseph’s squad. Zevi Samet led the way for the Macs with 17 points on 5 of 11 shooting from downtown. Daniel Margusov was a bright spot off the bench, playing big minutes and finishing the game with 16 points. He was extremely effective getting to the line and taking advantage once he got there, shooting a perfect 6 for 6 from the charity stripe. Turnovers were a big issue for the young Macs in this one, giving up the ball a staggering 21 times. As this squad gets more experienced and has time to gel with each other, it’s expected that their turnover margins should crater.

Saturday night will mark the Titans’ first game of the season. They are coming off of an incredible season last year, but only return one starter for this season. Cody Mitchell will have to take on a much bigger role this season and pick up the slack on offense to replace the scoring punch they’ve lost. Their sixth man from last season, Lucas Heflen, is an all-around excellent shooter. With an increased role this year, expect him to be a problem for opposing teams on the perimeter. The Titans are the favorites going into the game, but the Macs have been known to put up a fight against higher ranked teams in the past.

How to Watch:
