On Thursday at 1:00 p.m. (9) DRS will be taking on (8) Magen David. DRS is making their eighth Sarachek appearance. They had a lot of success last year, making it all the way to the finals before losing to Valley Torah in the championship game. They went 10-4 in the Yeshiva league, a good but not outstanding record, before losing to (5) SAR in the quarterfinals. The team is led by guard Ari Saffra and forward Isaac Solomon, two players who are excellent at getting to the rim to score. Their coach, Coach Stein, gets his players to pressure full court early and often.
Magen David is coming into this game with a slight edge. This is their ninth year at Sarachek. Last year, they were defeated in the Tier I quarterfinals by Valley Torah. (Anyone else starting to see some similarities?) Like DRS, they went 10-4 in the Yeshiva league. They went further than DRS in the playoffs, making it to the semifinals with a win over (15) TABC, where they lost to (4) Frisch. They are led by center Asher Melamed, but also have several other great players to rely on. The team is great on defense, and love to press their opponents hard.
On paper, this match looks extremely close. Both teams have a similar number of appearances at Sarachek. They lost last year to the same team. They finished their league play with the same record. While Magen made it one round farther in the playoffs, both teams ultimately lost to similarly ranked teams here at Sarachek, and the playoffs game Magen won was against a team ranked much lower than both of them. It’s hard to even predict a winner when both teams look this close. This game is sure to be incredible!
Tipoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in the MSAC. The game will be broadcast on MacsLive. Catch the action here.
