Gameday Preview: #2 Men’s Basketball vs Mount Saint Vincent

On Tuesday night, November 16th, the Yeshiva Maccabees will host the Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins. The Macs are coming off their closest game of the season so far. They entered the second half against St. Joseph’s with only a six point lead, but were able to turn things around and win by 24 points at the end of the game.

This will be the fourth game of the year for Mount Saint Vincent. They are currently 1-2 and are looking to upset the #2 team in the country. They will have to rely on a big game from Junior shooting guard, Dan Porcic, who is leading the Dolphins in scoring this season, averaging 13.3 points per game. They will have to shore up their defense if they want a chance to win this game. The Dolphins have allowed nearly 75 points per game this season and facing off against an offense like the Macs, they will have to make defense a focal point throughout the game if they want to stand a chance.

Keys to the game:

Get off to a Hot Start

  • The Macs have struggled to get going early in the games, often finding themselves with a close score halfway through the first half.

  • It’s extremely important that the Macs come out hitting in this game against the Mount Saint Vincent team that can score in bunches.

  • Although they are outscoring opponents by 35.7 points this season, it can’t hurt to put teams away earlier.

Protect the Paint:

  • In their last game against St Joseph’s-LI, the Macs allowed 34 of 58 points to come from the paint.

  • The Macs were hurt by dribble penetration and offensive rebounds that gave St Joseph’s-LI great looks at the basket.

  • They face a Dolphins team that has scored 38.5 points per game in the paint and has scored 49% of their total points in the paint this season.

  • The Macs will need to make it a point of emphasis to prevent drives to the rim and keep the opposing offense outside the paint.

Take Care of the Ball

  • CMSV has forced an average of 22 turnovers a game and has scored an average of 17 points per game off of those turnovers.

  • The Macs cannot allow the Dolphins to take advantage of turnovers.
