Gameday Preview: #2 Men’s Basketball @ St. Joseph’s L.I.

On Sunday, November 14th, the Yeshiva Maccabees will be heading to Patchogue, Long Island, to take on St. Joseph’s College – Long Island in their first conference matchup of the season. The Macs are currently 3-0 and coming off a 30-point win in front of their home fans.

Sunday will be the third game of the season for St. Joseph’s – LI, and it is an important one for the Macs early in the season. After starting off 0-2, losing by 7 and 10 points, the Golden Eagles will be facing what will be their toughest matchup of this young season. For SJCLI to win they will have to be at the absolute top of their game both offensively and defensively. There is a significant gap in scoring averages thus far between the two teams, as Yeshiva has averaged 98 points/game, while SJCLI has averaged 72 points/game.

The Golden Eagles are led by 6'4", 270 pound sophomore center Spencer Malloy, who is averaging 17.5 points/game and 9 rebounds. Malloy provides SJCLI with a steady post presence, and enters today's game shooting 65.2% from the field.

Keys to the game:

1. Get out in transition when it is there:

  • The Macs scored 22 fastbreak points in their last game against Eastern CT and have been exciting on the break so far this season.

  • That being said, The Macs need to be careful not to force a transition opportunity when it’s not there. This led to some uncharacteristic turnovers from the Macs in their last game.

2. Keep them off the FT line:

  • St Joseph’s has taken 16 free throws per game in their first two games.

  • The Macs average just 10.

  • The Macs need to keep St Joseph’s off the line and not allow them to get easy points at the line.

3. Continue to take advantage of opponents’ turnovers:

  • The Macs scored 14 points off of just 9 turnovers in the last game against Eastern CT.

  • They face a St Joseph’s team that has averaged 17 turnovers in their first two games.

  • The Macs should look to continue to capitalize on their opponent’s mistakes.

Tipoff will be at 1:00 PM at the Danzi Center. Fans will be in attendance and will have to comply with SJCLI spectator policies. The game will also be broadcast live starting at 12:50 PM; the link to watch can be found here.
