On Thursday, March 23rd, the host school, and the 16th seeded MTA Lions try their luck at this year's tournament, going against the top-seeded Shalhevet Firehawks.
MTA hasn’t had the best luck and hasn’t won a Tier I championship since 1999, although in last year’s tournament, they gave Valley Torah a hard time during the Tier I qualifiers which could’ve changed everything. This year’s season in the Yeshiva League wasn’t easy on MTA either. They had 4 wins and 10 losses, and missed the playoffs. However, as always, anything can happen in March. Some players to make sure to keep an eye on are Sruly Pariser, Gavriel Rudman, who’s their best scorer, and Ezra Halpert who’s their best 3-point-shooter. Needless to say, the boys have incredible potential and a tall task ahead of them.
The Shalhevet Firehawks are coming in with full force and with a great track record. They’ve been the number one seed in three of the last four Sarachek tournaments, appeared in four of the last five championships, and won two of them, showing that they definitely have what it takes to win. The team is led by guard Avi Halpert who is simply excellent with the ball in his hands. He’s a great shooter and passer and can truly just do it all. Another name to remember, as he could be a possible new X-factor, is Nathan Sellem. He’s a solid shooter and scorer and is more than capable of racking up 20 plus points.
The winner of this game will play against the winner of the DRS vs Magen David game in the Tier I quarterfinal. The loser will face the #17 RASG on Friday in the Tier 2 qualifier.
Tipoff for this one is at 5:30 p.m. You can watch the MacsLive broadcast here.
