In an oddly paced game, it was the YULA Panthers who came out victorious over the Kushner Cobras, as the team from Los Angeles salvaged their East Coast trip and brought home some hardware.
The first quarter of this Tier-III championship showed shades of what could possibly become a dog fight to the finish. But while the first frame was filled with big plays and a fast pace, the rest of the contest slowed down as both teams got stymied offensively.
YULA opened up the game with a couple of big three point shots and, although the Panthers would not hit a three-ball the rest of the game, it was enough to set the pace early on. But Kushner kept up and was able to grab an 11-10 lead by the end of the quarter.
We saw YULA’s depth come to life in the 2nd quarter as they slowly built a formidable lead over Kushner. By game’s end, six different YULA players scored over 4 points as the bench picked up for their missing leading scorer Alan Gindi. Evan Teichman was particularly effective for the Panthers, finishing with a game high 14 points.
The 3rd quarter had both sides struggling to really go on a run as we saw turnovers and forced shots galore. Still, we saw the Panthers cling to a 23-19 going into the final quarter of play.
Kushner was able to cut the deficit to as low as 3 but a clutch 2-point tally by YULA’s David Sassoon largely put the game out of reach. Several late-game free throws later and YULA completed their 36-27 victory to take home their first ever Tier III Championship.
For Kushner, Sam Bernstein and Gabe Plotsker were the driving forces behind their offense, finishing with 14 and 6 points respectively. By the end of the game, however, YULA’s depth was just too much to handle and they pulled away with the win.
Stay tuned for the rest of the Championship Monday action which will take place at the MSAC and of course, on MacsLive the official home of Yeshiva Sports, and exclusive broadcaster of the Red Sarachek tournament.
